The Endellion String Quartet perform the chamber music of John Foulds, a highly-regarded exploration of one of the lesser-known genres of the composer’s oeuvre. His compositions are varied in style, some drawing upon the late Romantic tradition and others reflecting his interest in the music of the Orient – Hindu ragas, non-diatonic scales and Greek modes for example. Foulds wrote for string quartet throughout his life, completing nine quartets (of which only three are known to still exist): the two quartets chosen for this recording date from his later period and the suite, Aquarelles, is relatively early.
