Mozart: Complete Works for Solo Piano

MozartMartino Tirimo

HTGCD900 – 5060332660346

Recorded between July 2005 and April 2006 in Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, this set contains all of Mozart’s works for solo piano. At its heart are the eternally popular Piano Sonatas for which Tirimo received the highest praise both in the concert hall and recording studio. The inclusion of all the Variations, early works, rarities, piano encores and The London Chelsea Sketchbook give the listener a unique opportunity to appraise Mozart’s entire oeuvre for solo piano.

‘A major and delightful project. Tirimo is expertly recorded in the Mendelssohn Saal of the Leipzig Gewandhaus. He brings out the essence of the music, nothing being allowed to come between the composer and us. There are several recommendable complete, or nearly complete, cycles of Mozart’s solo piano oeuvre, among which Tirimo’s series looks bound to rank very high. There is distinction in abundance in what we are given here, on discs which are generously full and excellently recorded.’
– International Record Review (5 stars)

‘The opening movements of the C major [Sonata], K279, and the D major, K284, are delivered with a forceful articulation similar to Barenboim’s in his 1970s cycle for EMI, though Tirimo is more elegant in his delineation of Mozart’s expressive second subjects. He emphasises the essentially operatic nature of Mozart’s writing. So it’s little surprise that in the opening Adagio of the E flat major, K282, he exploits a wonderfully mellifluous bel canto line, giving the movement a far more expressive character than the comparatively cool Uchida.’
